In this comic I introduced Lt. Commander Donna Preston. I wanted to establish a sort of romantic undertone between her and Hap, at least from Hap's perspective. This was supposed to be an awkward little conversation but I think the timing is off the mark. I sometimes forget that readers can't always anticipate the inflection and pitch of the characters voices as they were in my head. It doesn't help when I don't make as good use of facial expression as I should. I think a reader who's read the entire archive might be able to come back to this one and have a better idea of what I was going for but this might have been a little early in the strip to try and use such stylized humor.
I don't know why she has pens in her pocket. What could she be writing on in the year 3126?

More Broch Goodness. I just can't get enough of the casual way he talks about horrific or bizarre experiences and I don't think I ever will. Useless trivia: Broch is over 200 years old. It's not that he doesn't age it's just that he's spent a lot of time in sectors of space where time moves more slowly so 15 years to him might be 100 on earth. However I didn't want to make him the kind of character who shies away from close relationships for this reason. Instead I decided that loss is just something he takes in stride.
Back then I thought I'd be able to have the characters each doing something interesting or job related whenever they shot a video diary entry but that didn't last long. I think just having them sitting there is more true to the video diary feel I'm going for but I'm also a very lazy artist so... yea.

This is another really funny comic in my opinion. I enjoy writing Broch immensely. His character sort of exists outside of the rest of the crew. There are facets to him that they can never understand and are frankly a little of afraid of. He sort of represents an aspect of this future that reflects the rugged struggle for survival that humanity convinces itself doesn't really exist anymore. He is most comfortable outside fringes of established civilization but people like him are essential to that civlization. He's seen things that even Captain Banning would recoil from and it has affected him. Broch is not exactly stable but his instability is a necessity of the life he's chosen. He's one of the deeper characters in the cast and as such it's more fun to bounce him off the other crew members.
I also really like the title of this one. It's topical but it couldn't be more appropriate.
